    Wind Power Efficiency

Background: Wind turbines harvest energy from wind power. The efficiency of the turbine depends on the wind speed. Also, turbines are up and coming into the market as an alternative and efficient power source. But how efficient is it compared to other sources of power?

Purpose: See how efficient wind turbines are compared to other power sources and if it is a good investment.

    Materials: Computer

Procedure: See the energy harvested from solar, wind, and the power from gas on campus on elab2.hpa.edu. Username: elabconsole Password: papaya77

Click on ELAB TELEMETRYand look for Statistics: Energy Usage. See the energy harvested from the wind turbines on campus. Find the total amount of energy harvested from solar.

To find the amount of energy used that we had to pay for, subtract the total input from the total output. If the number is positive, we have a surplus and are not using any power off campus. If it is negative, we are paying for that amount of energy from an off campus power source.

A kWh of energy costs $0.40

Multiply the energy from solar by .4 and multiply the energy from wind by .4 to find the money saved for the solar and wind. Multiply the energy from off campus by .4 to find the total cost of energy from off campus (unless it's positive, then the cost is 0)

    Data:

Energy from Solar (Daily) Energy from Wind (Daily) Energy from off campus (Daily)

Money saved from Solar (Daily) Money Saved from Wind (Daily) Cost of Energy from off campus(Daily)

Cost of Solar Panels Cost of Wind Turbines

    Observations: Which saved more money?

Are wind turbines a good investment for HPA?
