~Food miles study
The island of Hawaii has all but two of the eight biomes. This gives Hawaii a unique advantage in regards agriculture. Having diverse environments leads to a large variety of plants and animals grown within a 4,028 square mile radius of one other. Hawaii is a semi remote island 80 miles away from the nearest land, Maui. It is 212.99 miles from Oahu, where most of shipments come from, and 3,850 miles away from California. Because Hawaii is a semi remote island it is less directly affected by other land's pollution and are less likely to contract their diseases or invasive species. This is not to say Hawaii does not have pollution or invasive species, rather that the source is not necessarily caused directly by neighboring lands. The main source of Hawaii’s pollution stems not from fossil fuels and large city smog, but instead from Kilauea, an active volcano located on the island. Birds and early Polynesian settlers carried a majority of the invasive species found here in Hawaii. More recently, invasive species have been carried here via shipment, such as the coqui frog. The native people of Hawaii thrived sustainably for centuries, but this is no longer the case. The island of Hawaii is no longer sustainable. What has changed between then and now that has caused the island to become unsustainable? How can we reverse this?
