My project will be about how music really affects the human brain. I will be using the EPOC headset and the Emotiv applications to do research. During my research, I will be testing the effects different genres of music have on the human brain, the effects of emotions particular songs have on individuals, and etc, using myself as the testing subject for the experiments. I am very interested in both music and science, and this independent study will combine both of these areas and allow me to explore to find more connections between the two. I personally am something of a musician as well, I have been playing piano since I was five years old, and after that I have also chosen to learn guitar and a traditional Chinese instrument. I love to listen to music and I love to create music. As a musician myself I am very curious about the effects that music really has on the human brain, and to be able to use science to observe and find those effects will have a profound influence on my perspective of music. If the research shows a conclusion that amounts to something, it will also influence how other people see music, and how we can rethink the uses of music. If I am granted to do this independent study, I will meet with Dr. Wiecking at least once every week and work in the energy lab during F period. I would really like to use the great facilities here at the energy lab to go deep into this topic, and I will definitely put maximum effort into this project.
