Installation & Use Instructions
-------------------------------

- 1. Make sure that you have the latest Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Shockwave plugins.

You can access the tune-up page at http://browsertuneup.pearsoncmg.com/browser_tuneup.html.

- 2. Starting the Program:

Windows users: Locate the file "start.exe" on the CD-ROM and double-click on it.

Macintosh OSX users: Locate the file "startOSX" on the CD-ROM and double-click on it.

Macintosh OS9.x users: Locate the file "startOS9" on the CD-ROM and double-click on it.

When you run the program, you can click the "Browser Tune-up" button on the global Nav bar, which will help you determine whether you have the browser and plugin you need to view the content.

--------------------------------
Path length limitation
--------------------------------

The path name for your file export can not be longer than 57 characters. If you specify a path name for your file export that is longer than 57 characters, your system will alert you and will not allow the export. Please select another location for the export with a shorter path length. Users of Windows 2000 & XP must save exports into folders residing within the Hard Drive and NOT onto the Desktop.

-----------------------------
Performance & Troubleshooting
-----------------------------

- 1. Changing your default browser:

This application automatically starts in your default browser. To change the default browser for your computer system, please follow the instructions provided by your browser's help system. Do not modify these settings while using this application because that will generate unpredictable results.

If you are using a MAC and your computer is having problems selecting a browser to run the application, do the following:
	Operating System MAC OS 9.2:
Select the Apple ->Control Panel->File Exchange
		Select the PC Exchange tab
		Scroll down to HTML
		Select and click change
A list of possible web browsers will appear in a box
		Select your desired browser
		Click change
		Close dialog box
Operating System MAC OS X: (less than 10.3)
Click on the Apple ->System Preferences
		Select the Web tab
		Select the default Web browser.
Operating System MAC OS Panther version 10.3:
The default Web browser is selected by starting the Safari Web browser and setting the default Web browser in the Safari Preferences.

There is a known browser selection issue on MAC OS X: the default browser settings appear to be ignored. An alternative method for forcing browser selection is as follows:

Locate and highlight an HTML file on the CD (any HTML file on the CD should work).
From the Finder select File -> Get Info.
Select Open With and then select your desired browser.
Follow the prompts to change all HTML documents to open with your desired browser.

- 2. Ejecting the CD:

The application runs off of your system's CD drive. So do not eject the CD while using the application because that will generate unwanted error messages. Reinserting the CD will typically resolve any problem.

- 3. Browser hangs or crashes on start-up:

If your browser hangs or crashes on start-up, any one of several conditions could be causing this behavior.

> Try re-installing the Macromedia Shockwave 8.5 plugin from the Macromedia website at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/. Some earlier versions of the Shockwave 8.5 plugin are known to be incompatible with this application.

> If you are running a personal firewall on your system, it may interfere with how this application uses the TCP/IP protocol. You may have to disable or specifically configure your firewall software in order to run this application.

> This symptom can also be caused by rapidly closing and opening your browser.

> Some systems can generate this symptom via the installation of multiple versions of the same browser. In this scenario the configuration utility may read a prior version of the cookie, a version that marks the machine as passing the configuration tests. To resolve this, always delete your cookies prior to installing/re-installing a browser.

- 4. Issues with Physlets on the Mac:

On Mac OS, Physlets are supported only on Mac OS X.3 (Panther) on the Safari 1.2 browser.

- 5. Netscape on the PC reports that it cannot find a file or it takes too long to load:

This is a known issue with Netscape on Windows 2000, Me, and NT. To solve the problem, click on the browser's Reload button.

- 6. Refreshing your cache in Internet Explorer 5.5 for the PC.

Internet Explorer 5.5 stops responding if you clear your browser cache while running this CD. It is recommended that you close and restart your browser after clearing your cache.

- 7. Netscape browser memory issues on the Macintosh:

If you experience slow playback, encounter an Error Type 3, 2, or 1, or see other performance issues on Netscape for the Macintosh, you will need to increase the memory allocated for Netscape.
To change the amount of memory allocated to the browser:

a) Close the browser then locate the actual Netscape program icon in its file--NOT a desktop alias--and click on it.
b) Select "Get Info" from the File Menu then select the "Memory" from the submenu.
c) Increase the memory to a level of your choice. The application works best with memory settings of at least 32000k, 48000k preferred.

- 8. TestGen and QuizMaster Installation and platform support:

a) We recommend that no other applications be running during the installation.
b) The TestGen install itself can take at least 5 minutes.
c) Factors that influence installation time are (1) the number of items you have and (2) how fragmented your machine's hard disk is.
d) TestGen 5.5 is not supported by Windows Me.
e) If the Browser's File Open and Save dialog box appears, click on the Open button to install the software.

- 9. Viewing this ReadMe file:

When you select READ ME on the splash (initial) screen, Notepad (PC), SimpleText (Mac OS 9), or TextEdit (OS X) will present the file with its own screen. When you wish to quit Notepad or SimpleText, do not use a keyboard shortcut, because this may also close the main application. Instead use File->Exit (PC) or File->Quit (Mac), or else click on the text window's own "X" close button.

- 10. MS Office document issue:

MS Office documents may not open properly within the browser, depending on the user's default browser settings. MS Office documents may be opened directly by double clicking on the document.

- 11. QuickTime on Mac OS 9.2.2 using Netscape 6.23 and 7.0:

QuickTime movies using Netscape 6.23 as the default browser may not play properly. There is a known issue with Netscape 7.0 where after the movie plays, an error message appears when closing the browser.

- 12. Exporting files on Windows 2000 & XP:
The path name for your file export can not be longer than 57 characters. If you specify a path name for your file export that is longer than 57 characters, your system will alert you and will not allow the export. Please select another location for the export with a shorter path length. Users of Windows 2000 & XP must save exports into folders residing within the Hard Drive and NOT onto the Desktop.
