Today I divulged from my central project and moved into more of a CRISPR mindset. I researched into all of the applications of gene editing. I also shifted my lens into that of an environmentalist. I though of the major problems that our next generation will face. One of the largest looming issues is the amount of people of the planet and being able to feed them all. Meat is truthfully a western luxury that we often take fro granted. We use almost all of the earth agricultural resources to feel cows in large feedlots in order to feed a small populations of the earth. There is a new movement in the biotech world where other organisms such as yeast are being used to produce animal products using much less resources and thus becoming more affordable. There is synthesized eggs, and milk that will soon be on the market. Egg whites are made of a very small number of proteins that are simple to produce. They has been great success with producing eggs from GMOed yeast. In addition lactose and other sugars and proteins that are found in milk have been easily produced by several companies. Meat however is a bit of a different animal no pun intended. It is harder to produced in a lab setting and there is no fat content that is present in the meat. In addition there is still the need of animals to gather muscle tissues or stem cells. Below I linked some of the largest biotech companies that are leading this fight.
