We made ethernet cables today. Well, we did after messing around with google glass and oculus rift for a good twenty minutes. Davy Ragland, clever boy, downloaded a game that makes you feel like you're in the matrix, if you can get over the ns-64 quality graphics. Making the cables was fun though. First we cut out a chunk of a pre made cable that contained eight wires. Next we stripped the end of it to expose the wires, a good two inch section, using one of the easiest casing strippers I have ever seen (I haven't seen that many though, so I really wouldn't know.) This showed that the wires were intertwined in pairs to cancel out electric current, a safety procedure perhaps. We untwined? Untwinded? Undid the wires that were paired together and arranged them in a very specific order dictated by the color on the wires. Once all eight were in order, we cut off excess wire, and stuck the whole thing in a head that contained gold (a great semiconductor!) contacts. Then we used this cool squeezy thing to push the contacts into the wires and secure the head, establishing the connection between contacts and wires, which made the cables work. They transmit a ridiculous gigabyte per second.
