May 14 - 17 Weekly Blog

This is my final blog for the year. It has been a great year and I have learned so much. I am currently enrolled for ISR next year and have attached my new proposal to this web blog. Although it is not required, I will probably add to this blog a little bit over the summer as I plan on continuing to work on my research.

Today was the last day of ISR! We got to go up to the roof of the Elab and just laying around and talked about past memories and our goals for the future. It was super fun!

May 2nd 2018 Daily Blog

Today in ISR, Angelina, Sameer, and I talked about the Space Webpage (space.hpa.edu) that Dr. Bill wants us to make. The goal of the page is to have all of all of our research about different topics related to space housed in one place for anybody who needs to find it. We will also need to write summaries and descriptions describing the projects. Here is how we divided up the work:
  • Sneha
    • Radio
    • AMES
    • Space Weather
    • Vog Net / Weather Station
  • Sameer
    • Hydroponics
    • HI-SEAS
  • Angelina
    • Moonbase
    • HISEAS
    • KECK
    • PICEAS
  • Me
    • Muon Detector
    • HISEAS
    • Moonbase
    • AMES
    • CFHT
    • BASALT
As you can see, there is some crossover between the different things. For the Muon Detector, I need to write up a lot but Dr. Bill asked me to also discuss radiation and muon flux in particular. For HI-SEAS it is my job to talk about how this is actually applicable to Mars, so I will talk about the communication delay, the isolation, the food, and the EVA's. I am also in charge of researching and writing about the other Mars analog simulations; Mars-500, F-MARS (Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station), Mars Desert Reseach Station, E-MARS (European Mars Analog Research Station), A-MARS (Australia Mars Analog Research Station, Concordia Station, and NEEMO. For the Moonbase section, I need to talk to Angelina, but I think it would be a good decision for her to write about the actual summit and our plans for moving forward and for me to write about the analog moonbase and lunar challenges and geography. For AMES, I simply need to talk to Sneha about what we want to write. For CFHT, I will write about my internship and show pictures of my current model. Finally, I do not know much about the BASALT project, but Dr. Bill thinks it will be something I might want to get involved in, so I will do research on it and do a write-up.

Today in ISR I continued working on my CFHT internship. I fixed most of the alignment problems by making the inner hexagon slightly smaller, but there are still a couple places causing problems. I am meeting with Alexis on Wednesday to go over all of my progress and the next steps for part 2.

Today in ISR I worked with Dr. Bill and Sameer on fixing the NASA HI-SEAS antena. It has broke three times recently; twice because of lightning and more recently due to an ant infestation. To prevent the lightning, the part is grounded in multiple different locations and to prevent more ants the openings were all sealed off as well as possible. Fingers crossed that this one will last longer!

Here are some pictures:

April 15th - 20th Weekly Blog

Next Week:
  • Muon Detector - I am still just waiting for my parts to arrive, however, I need to reach out to UH Manoa and ask about their ability to reflow solder the parts I need. I talked to their representative at the college fair and she believed that their engineering department would be able, and willing, to do it for me.
  • CFHT Internship - I have been struggling to find rides to and from work recently so I have been going less and less, however, I am still getting quite a bit down. I am meeting with Alexis on Wednesday to look at my progress so far.
  • Quantum Physics - I really need to start working harder on my website and reading more and more of Classical Dynamics of Particle Systems, but due to APs I have been struggling to find the time.

Today in ISR I did has Dr. Bill asked and put all of the parts into specific shopping carts so he could make three swift orders instead of 30 orders. Here are my two current shopping carts:
There are three parts that had too long of a lead time on DigiKey (part P122155-ND only has a 4 day lead time) so I will try to find them on Mouser and/or SparkFun tomorrow.

Also, Ilan, Daniel, and I were asked to speak at the board meeting on Friday. I want to outline exactly what I am going to say, as I am not the best at speaking in front of large groups of strangers, and I have a basic outline started. I will add sub-bullets tomorrow.
  • Why I Decided to Come to HPA
  • NASA HI-SEAS
  • CFHT and KECK
  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Muon Detector

We also talked about where in the state could possibly reflow solder, and I believe that either KECK of CHFT (if not both) have the ability to do so and might be able to solder some of the parts I need. I will talk to Alexis about it when I go to work on Wednesday and if CFHT cannot do it then I will email Jim, who works at KECK, and see if they can do it. If needed, I could also reach out to UH Manoa who probably have the ability to reflow solder.

Update (10:29):
I also just found a circuit picture which will be helpful in the future.
