Weekly Entry 05/09-05/13

This week was a tad uneventful because of all of my AP exams. I shifted my focus to studying for those, so I did not accomplish much in terms of my projects. Those are now done, however, so next week I should be back in business. Id like to do something fun in my last classes of the school year.

Today, Alice was not here, so I did not set up my new sensors. Instead, I went out and helped to fly the drone. We attempted to get campus shots, but I have a feeling it was too cloudy. Its always awesome to get outside and fly!

Today, I was unfortunately not in class because I was taking an AP Language and Composition exam. Later that day, however, I did have the chance to explain my project to a man who extremely influential in the educational world. They were composing a documentary on project based learning.

Today I spent the class period studying with Mr. Bleckel for my AP Physics C exam later that day. I also took a look at the variety of lasers and photosensors that arrived for my air particulate detector.

My lasers came in for my vog sensors! I am super pumped to learn how to set these up with the photo gates. I think that Dr. Bill mentioned soldering, and I am excited to learn how to do this. In class on Monday, I am sorry to say that I spent the whole time studying for my AP Art History exam because I was terrified I was going to fail. I took it today, and I think it went well!

Weekly Entry 04/26-04/30

This week I gave my semester two presentation, learned about lasers and had the opportunity to use some, and observed Juan and Erin fixing the electronics on the golf cart. Next week I would like to set up my sensors for vog detecting and possibly learn about circuit work.

Today I had to leave class early for the Track and Field Island Championships, so I spent the short time I had in class watching Juan and Erin fix the electronics on their golf cart project. I have a lot to learn!

Today I primarily played with the lasers that Alice and I are going to use to detect particulate in the air for the purpose of monitoring vog content on the HPA Campus. We tried to use the high powered green laser to light a match, but we had the incorrect type of match, and on further inspection of the laser, we discovered that it was 5mW rather than the suggested 55mW. It was not as high powered as we had expected. That was a bummer because we had spent time researching interesting experiments for a 55mW green laser. (the color is important because it changes the wave length). At the end of class, Dr. Bill gave Alice and I a 500mW laser with a broken lens to look it. I really wish it worked because you can use one to burn holes through paper.

Today I gave my semester two presentation to Ms. Petteys and Dr. Bill. It went smoothly until the fire drill went off. Luckily, I had gotten through most of the content I wanted to share about my acoustics, HI-SEAS, zero waste, and miscellaneous projects.

Weekly Entry 04/19-04/23

Lately. I have been feeling a little lost during my research period because I have reached a standstill on all of my projects. I attempted starting some new research, but I need supplies. I am not quite sure what I am going to be doing for the short time that I have left, but I would really like to learn how to fly the drone with Juan this week.

Today, the primary thing I did was present the Nasa HI-SEAS project I have been working on this past semester to members of the board. The presentation was casual and went well like to dozens of other short talks I have given this year. It is nice to feel comfortable explaining my project and being able to clearly communicate with strangers that may have no background in my area of research. The skills I have learned will definitely come in handy for my future endeavors.

Today I researched laser detection of air particulate in preparation for setting up a vog sensor on campus. With Alice, I pointed a high powered laser at a sensor we already had in the lab and watched the data spike. I am still a bit confused to how/why this worked because I was having issues finding resources on the internet.

Today I started off class my reading about Tung's project that won at a prestigious science fair in Japan. In short, he is using an EEG headset as an early detection of driver drowsiness in order to lessen the number of car accidents per year. It's pretty awesome! I spent the rest of class showing Alice how to use FuzzMeasure and conduct an acoustic analysis of a space. I also explained a little bit of it to Mr. Bleckel.

Weekly Entry: 04/11 - 04/15

This week I was absent on Monday, spent most of Wednesday researching tools and information for the vog project I am looking to start, and on Friday, I had a blast filming drone shots and testing the golf carts. Next week I would like to look more into Sequal Pro and the materials necessary for setting up a particulate sensor on the HPA campus.

Today I had a fantastic time filming drone shots with Juan, Daniel, Alice, Erin, and Sydney. We also tested the limits of the golf carts they revamped. It was awesome realizing that we did not have to worry about the cart's batteries running out because they installed solar panels onto them. I'd like to get a closer look at the shots Juan and Daniel got of the sound panels that were put up on the classrooms

Today I continued researching satellite information and facts about vog for the new project I want to start. Tomorrow I need to talk to Dr. Bill about setting up a sensor, streaming satellite data, inputing data into the HPA EMC page, and revamping the sensors that HPA had already placed around the island. I also want to continue learning about the capabilities of Sequal Pro.

Weekly Entry 04/04-04/06

On Monday I began researching a new project. I would like to start monitoring vog conditions through satellite imaging and sensors at HPA. At HPA, we have put a lot of focus on the environment we create and studying it in order to improve conditions. Right now, environmental qualities such as CO2 content, temperature, humidity, and sound levels are being monitored in classrooms, but other particulate in the air is not being recorded. On the Big Island, vog is a serious issue, and I think it is important for us to understand just how much of it we intake. Next week, I would like to continue working on this project. On Wednesday, I worked with sequal pro and met with visitors. I was absent on Friday for a track invitational.

Today I downloaded sequel pro to my computer and began learning how to access different servers and the data held on them. I also spent about 20 minutes talking to a family visiting HPA about my project with Nasa HI-SEAS. It was a great chance to work on explaining my project. Below is a screenshot of the first step in Sequal Pro

Today I researched and brainstormed a new project idea. I would like to monitor vog conditions through satellite imaging and by setting up a sensor at HPA. I spent the first part of class researching what vog is, its chemical contents, and its affects on health and visibility. Then I moved on to searching for satellite imaging of the vog itself. I found some awesome resources through volcano national park, Nasa, and VMAP (Vog Measurement and Prediction Project) through University of Hawaii at Manoa. I would like to acquire some imaging from Nasa's Terra Satellite and its MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). In attempt to access this, I found some strange government code, but with more research I am sure I can find some imaging of the Big Island. I read a Nasa article that cited Terra's images for research on the Big Island's vog. I also talked to Dr. Bill about setting up a sensor at HPA to measure air particulate. This would involve mirrors and a laser, and I am super pumped. We may also use a CCN (Cloud Condensation Nuclei) Counter. I am excited to start this new project! There is a lot to do.

Weekly Entry 03/28-04/01

The primary things I did this week were consolidate graphs on the EMCc page so that they are more streamline and comprehensive and skype Mark from Kennedy Space Center. I also spoke to Dr. Bill briefly about the next steps of the Kiosk. I think I am going to help once a baseline program is set up. and Alice and I can begin inputing sensory data. I would prefer to work on aspects of the kiosk that involve the sensory data from HPA or the kiosk's technology/programming. Next week, I would like to give some attention to my acoustics project, research some questions for Mark, re email the HI-SEAS crew asking for which data sets they would like on the easy access default dashboard on the EMC page, and possibly start something new and doable.
