Week summary: 5/9/16 -5/14/16

This week I spent most of my time setting up and playing around with the Oculus !!! I also spent some time with Juan flying the drone, and I worked some more on my script for the video that Juan will be shooting for my project next week.

Happy Friday the 13th !!!! Today I went with Juan, Erin and Savannah in the golf cart to go filming and flying with the drone !!! It was really fun, because it wasn't too windy out today. Juan even let me fly it a bit !!

Today I played around a lot more with the Oculus !!! There are a ton of games downloaded on it, including one that involves swimming around in the ocean, which is really fun. Zen and I want to download some more things, including recreations of some of the environments from the Studio Ghibli films, which look really beautiful! We will probably do that next class.

I'm back from Oahu today !!! All we did in class was play around with the Oculus, which is so so so sooo cool !!! I want one of my own !! There are a bunch of games that the others downloaded onto it while I was away, so we all took turns playing around and getting used to virtual reality. It's a bit disorienting at first, but so much fun !!!

This week was pretty short for me, because I had to leave for Oahu on Thursday morning for track states. On Monday, I gave my final presentation to Ms. Petteys and Mr. Ferrel. On Wednesday, we set up the Oculus Rift and began playing around with it !!! It is such a cool piece of tech, I can't wait to use it more when I come back !!!!!!!

Today we set up with Oculus Rift in the E-Lab !!!!!!! IT IS SO AWESOME !!!!!!!! Zen, Oliver and Ilan were all there and we were taking turns checking it out. Although we didn't manage to download anything playable before class ended, I'm sure we will be playing with the Oculus a lot before the school year ends.

Today I gave my final project presentation to Ms. Petteys, Mr. Ferrel and Dr. Wiecking. I think it went pretty well ! Then, I had to rush off to my AP exam, so I had to leave class early.

This week I did more research into creating a plan for future kids that might work on my project. I also talked a lot with various visitors who were touring the E-Lab, and worked on the visuals for my presentation on Monday.

Today I had to leave class early because of track BIIFs in Hilo today. However, before I left I finished my visuals for my presentation on Monday.

Today I spent most of class talking to a prospective student visiting from New York! She stayed in class for basically the entire period, so I spent time showing her the NASA corner and my specific project, as well as talking to her about life as a boarder from the mainland and living in the dorms. She was very nice, and I hope that she chooses to come to HPA next year! I also worked a bit on preparing for my final fourth quarter presentation to Ms. Petteys, which will happen next week Monday, I think.

Today we had even MORE visitors in the E-Lab !!! I feel like every class we have a new group of people here to see what we're up to. I talked a lot with Tiare Police about my project, and about the E-Lab in general. I checked in on solar weather, which has become stagnant again after the large sunspot from last week disappeared. I thought that maybe the big coronal hole what had formed would cause some drama, but it broke apart over the weekend, and the sun is now quiet again. We also had a fire drill today, so our class was cut a little short.

This week was a very active week for the sun, which is a nice change of pace !! There was a large sunspot, AR2529, that produced a lot of flares and radiation throughout it's life, although none of it was aimed at Earth. There was also a HUGE coronal hole that began forming vertically along the sun's face, and is continuing to grow larger. We also had a lot of visitors in class this week, so lots of chances to discuss our projects. I also helped Savannah and Alice analyze the water consumption of the dorms, to help determine what type of water set up should be added to Robertson's next year.

Today, members of the Board came to look at everyone's projects and to see what is happening up in the E-Lab. We got to discuss out projects and future projects with them, which was cool. Savannah, Alice and I also looked at the water consumption of Anna's and Hartwell's dorm, because those dorms have different water storage setups. We want to figure out which setup is most efficient, so that it can be implemented in Robertson's and in the gym locker rooms. Additionally, the coronal hole that was beginning to form earlier this week has grown in size ! It has created a "canyon" of magnetic solar wind spitting down the center of the sun's face. There might be some CMEs in store for us next week!

Today a student and their family came to tour the E-Lab, so everyone got to practice "pitching" their research projects to strangers. Sunspot AR2529 has left the sun's disc, so the face has become quiet again. Also, the Lyrid meteor shower has begun, so I will try to get out tonight to see some of the show. Hopefully the sky will be clear, and the full moon won't outshine the meteors.

Today is a very active day for the sun !!! Sunspot AR2529 is spewing out tons of radiation and particles, and earlier this morning produced a large M6.7-class solar flare. This is the most activity we've seen from the sun in months, so this is quite exciting !! There isn't much chance that this flare will hit us, because AR2529 isn't facing Earth directly. However, there is also a large coronal hole forming in the upper hemisphere of the sun's surface, which is producing lots of solar wind and shifting the magnetic fields around. I will continue to track this coronal hole throughout the week.

I haven't really done any work over the past two weeks, since I've been off the island. I mostly only did research into costs/logistics of having a solar sensor on campus. I think the best idea would be to make one ourselves, but I will ask what Dr. Wiecking thinks next week.

Today was my first day back after the trip !!!! It was really great to see everyone and to get back into the swing of things. At the beginning of class, Savannah, Alice and I watch a short video that the HISEAS crew made in order to show off their habitat, by showing birds-eye shots of the hab and surrounding area. It was pretty short, but funny and cool. Then we went with Juan and Daniel to watch them film the solar panels on top of the English building, using the drones.

While I was away, I did a lot more research into how much a solar sensor would cost us. They all seem to be pretty expensive, so I think the best thing for us to do would be to make one DIY in the E-Lab. I will pitch this idea to Dr. Wiecking next Monday.
