Independent Study Application Form
(2014-2015) - Senior Year
1.
What is the reason for this independent study?
I would like to continue with my project last year with the assessment of the cognitive stages of dementia patients. I will continue using the NeuroSky Headset, in order to interpret the brainwaves to the psychological results. Along with this capstone project, I wanted to do something more hands-on. I wanted to begin with a heart-rate sensor using a breadboard (which I recently got the tools for) yay! Along with the brain vs behaviour set of the experiment, I wanted to add a body vs behaviour component into it as well.
I also would like to master understanding programming sensors that I may possibly use in my projects.
Possible outline:
Heart rate vs …… (Stable heart rate, irregular)
Ask about any medication usage
Deduce:
-Attentiveness
-Stress - quickening pulse (relate to the first experiment)
-temperature
-Just woken up (good to study? attentive?)
-Music (what kind of music do people experience regular heart rate)
-Emotions vs heart rate
How does heart rate correlate to students and their effective studying and life habits
2.
Course Overview
Firstly, I will need master the brainwave kit, in order to be able to flexibly use the kit for all projects. On top of that, I will get in contact with the nursing home once again to get approval of resuming the tests.
Along with gradually learning how to manually build a sensor and set the program on my computer, I hope to establish a conclusion in which expresses the variability of the brains of the elderly.
3.
Course Outcome
By the end of this independent
study, I expect to master the use of the brainwave kit, and programming using a
computer. Also, I expect to come up with a completed tool in which would assist
patients and elderly to make their lives easier.
4.
Assessment
C) Portfolio – The portfolio will consist
of completed kits and programs on the computer
d) Performance Assessment – Determination,
dedication and the progresses of the project
5.
How often will you meet with your supervising
faculty member?
During the independent study period and other free times, I
will go to the energy lab to work. Dr. Bill is usually at the lab, therefore I
will have support and assistance very frequently. Although, once a week we will
meet in order to see if the project is going in the correct direction. Dr. Bill
has great knowledge of the kits that I would be using, therefore I will be able
to figure out my project details by meeting with him.
