Weekly Report 5/18/19

This was the final week of my ISR carer, that's pretty crazy to think about. It was mainly spent shooting scenes for me and Ethan's video showcasing some of the drone stuff he's been working on throughout the year. He did a fantastic job on the editing (and did it in a very timely manor). Here's a link to the video: https://drive.google.com/open?id=19-iyxGU0b7TG_Fl89tiCMM4szFT2wz0s
Thank you Dr. Bill for the incredible class/year you've helped me achieve. I sincerely hope everything works out in the years to come.

Today in class me and Ethan spent time to finish shooting all of the scenes needed for our video. Ethan tells me he should be able to edit the video by tomorrow (which I am very thankful he is doing). I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Today in class me and Ethan spent some time shooting some scenes for our video. We got most of the ones which we could do without the thermal drone done today. We hope for better weather next class so we can get the rest of the shots.

Today the weather was not too good, so me and Ethan spent some time on the drone simulator and coming up with ideas for our video. We hope to shoot the video over the next couple of classes. It should be pretty fun.

Weekly Report 5/11/19

This week in class I spent most of my time on drone stuff. Me and Ethan have figured out a very interesting project idea for him (or anyone else working on the drone program) next year. You can read my other weblogs from this week if you want more detail, but its to mount other things to the enterprise drone. Me and Ethan also plan on making a search and rescue video for our final video project for the class. This should be pretty fun to make, and I am at least fairly excited to get to work on it. Next week I plan on getting that video done.

I was not in class today and as such don't have anything to report.

Today in class me and Ethan looked into the actual logistics of attaching things to the drone platform. Sofar as we can tell there should be no big issues with mounting our own devices to the Mavic Enterprise. We also looked into possible drop-systems for some of the Inspire 1 drone. We think an ideal setup for search and rescue would be to have the Mavic Enterprise to locate and instruct people, while a Inspire 1 could be dispatched with supplies (as apparently it can hold a payload of up to ~5 pounds). This would allow for possibly life-saving supplies to be delivered to people in hard to reach locations much sooner than any manned team could.

Today in class I spent most of my time going over possible project ideas with Ethan of which we both agreed could be interesting. The main idea was this: The Mavic Enterprise has a modular attachment system via a port on the top of the drone which has micro-usb for data and power. I believe it would be possible to 3d print the attachment point, which effectively would allow us to put anything we wanted onto the drones. A couple possibilities of this would be air quality sensors, or even a wifi access point. I hope that next year Ethan or anyone else working on the drone program will be able to pursue this idea.

Weekly Report 5/4/19

This week mainly came down to two things. Drones and people visiting from MIT. The first thing that happened was the people from MIT came to talk with us about our projects and to tell us a bit about alot of the things they were working on at MIT. It was very interesting to hear first-hand stories on how many things happened within MIT. Sofar as drones go, I spent some time working in the flight simulator to get familiar with them. I hope to next week fly a real one, as I believe it is an important skill be able to do in the modern age.

Today in class I spent most of my time flying/using the drone simulator. I think it is an interesting, but more importantly good skill to have. Next week I would like to get my hands on an actual drone and try flying it. Drones are the future of security and search and rescue, so I believe it is a skill that is very valuable to learn.

Today in class we worked mainly with the sound system and with a drone simulator. Ethan booted up the drone simulator and taught me, Daniel, and Julieta how to use the Mavic 2 (which has the same body as the Enterprise drone we recently acquired.) It was very fun to see others try flying it around with realistic physics as it did a very good job at simulating the actual drone.

Today in class we had some people over from MIT to show our projects too. It was very fun and interesting to talk with people who knew a decent amount about our topics so we could have actual discussions about them. They told us some awesome stories about different things which have been accomplished in one of the labs in MIT. It's a pretty awesome school.

This week was pretty uneventful sofar as my projects, but very eventful sofar as publicity goes. I was absent on Tuesday for a field trip, and on Wednesday we had our presentations in which we showed our projects to teachers and students alike. This was quite fun as it gave me the opertunity to show some of my friends the kind of stuff I've been working on in the class, and I hope that we may have inspired some to take the class in their coming years. On the side, we also setup the sound system in the monolab so we now have some pretty awesome audio.

Today in class we just worked on the sound system. I also discussed possible finishing projects with Daniel along with talking about what we will be doing to conclude this class for the year (i.e a video project of which I hope to make with Daniel and Luke if they would be willing).

Weekly Report 4/20/19

This week our classes mainly consisted of working on stuff to do with our presentations which will be happening next week Wednesday. I finished the student corner page (which people will view to get a general idea of questions to ask) and my one pager (which will give slightly more detail). Next week should be interesting. Other than presenting, I want to test the UPS system I assembled if possible to make sure it is reliable enough to keep systems running in the case of power failure.

Today in class I spent a good chunk of time working on the presentation/student corner page. Other than that I looked into the military's plans of use for the Hololense system developed by Microsoft. This is quite interesting as they go into the progression by version they would like to be seeing with the project. They also have quite interesting uses of which the military would like to get out of them like target acquisition/ballistic calculations.

Today in class more info on our final presentation was given to us by Dr. Bill. We need to make a page on student corner detailing what we did, and fill out a page with some more info on our projects. I started work on both, and I am almost done with them. Tomorrow I plan on finishing it all off.

Weekly Report 4/13/19

This week was mainly spent working with UPS's. I learned the in's and outs of them, and set a few of them up as power backups (if anyone is reading this you may be able to look under the middle desk and see them). The basics were that they all use a specific kind of battery which depending on the UPS must be arranged in a certain way to work. If you are looking for some specifics, I would recommend looking into my daily weblogs. Next week I hope I will be able to work a bit more with them as I would like to further my understanding of how they work.

Today in class I mainly spent time working on more UPS's. I took one apart, and tested its batteries. I believe one may have leaked some acid, but the other seemed to be working just fine. I would like to spend some time next week to put in a new pair of batteries into the UPS as it may not have actually been its fault that it overheated. We'll see.
