This week I finally got to get all the Esc's hooked back up. I made a whole new power strip to plug in the ESC's to the battery. This power strip will allow me to run my wires more neatly and have the ability to unplug one ESC at a time. Also what I did this week was setup how I was gonna hold down my flight controller and the receiver. I used legos to build a little hut for them. Next week the goal will be to get my drone in the air.
This week what I did was create a whole new base for my drone. For the middle 5" by 5" pieces I used lego pieces. For the arm I used vex parts. I went this route for the new base to make it stronger and more stiff. I was able to get the base built and install the motors. This next week will be all about installing the remaining components and getting it to fly.
This week what I did was finish my drone part 2. What I did was rebuild the whole frame from the same foam core board material. This made it a little stiffer since it was new. Then we had our presentations. I present to Ms. Pettys, Mr. H, and my class. The presentation went good only wish I could've flown my drone. Next week I'm going to try and build my drone out of vex parts to see if that is better. I know it'll be heavier but I think it'll make it more sturdy and help with the motor mounting problem. My motors would almost fly out of the foam core.
This week I tried to build a new frame from the same foam core board. What I did was drill out all the mounting holes again. I was in the bat cave using the drill press. Also this week we did mock presentation to prepare for the upcoming presentations. Next week will be finishing the drone and my presentation.
This week I tried hard to design and 3d print out drone pieces. Later to find out that the printer doesn't work. So what I did after was cut up the foam core board using a heated blade. This allowed for smooth and perfect cuts with no destruction of the board. This helps to keep the board strong and sturdy. This next week will be too drill and mount all the motors. Hopefully I can keep this foam board strong for a while.
This week what I was trying to find out what was a good alternative material to use for my drone. I found out that a lot of drones were 3D printed. So Ive been trying to find a good CAD program that can be used for 3D printers. I was looking to hard for top notch ones. When I didn't know that google sketch up could be used for my needs. So this next week I will be using google sketch up to create a replica of my drone so that I can print it out. I will use the 3D printer in the Energy Lab to print my pieces.
Last week we got the motors and Esc's running. Also we got the software completely running with the Open pilot CC3D flight controller. I got to fly it really quick but I need to work on wire management. This next week will be all about wire management.
This week what I did was try to get the battery situation sorted. I had one patter with one plug that needed to power 4 motors. I found this little connecter and solder a couple of pieces of wire to make a plug. I came out pretty good. Also this week I ordered a transmitter and receiver. Next week I will be trying to connect all the ESC's with the new connectors.
This week was good but short. I got back from my trip Tuesday night so I had Wednesday and Thursday to work. I worked on getting motors attached. I also worked on fixing one of the wings. It was drilled wrong and didn't fit. After I redrilled I hooked everything up and plugged in all the ESC's. Next week I will try to get the drone flying and working.
This week I worked on marking the ESC's and testing all of them together. I got all of them to work. Then on the other day I was with the middle schoolers as they flew helicopters and learned about them. Next week I will test the motors and ESC's with the flight controller.
This week the motors and ESC's came in so I tested them on Wednesday. They all work and was nice to see some progress. The next thing I did setup all 4 o the motors and ESC's together as one. It was almost like a drone just not attached. I got all 4 of them to work together and to spin in the right directions. I was able to write a code and used a switch to control the motors. Next class I will be trying to attach the motors and get everything running. I would also like to get the flight controller to work.
This week was a pretty good week. We had our meetings with Ms. Pettys and Mr. Ferrel. It went good and I felt more calm this time. Other things I did this week was help Janelle with drilling of parts and we ordered motors and ESC's from Amazon. Next week will hopefully get the parts and can install and hopefully fly my drone.
This week I did a lot of research and I helped out others. I helped out the two new guys with their Gantt charts and things. Then I helped Janelle with drilling holes. I finished the code for SS Sugar which was my robotics project from first semester. Still waiting on parts to come in.
This week what I did was search for some good motors and other designs of quad rotors. Also this week I was able to finish my robotics project which is called SS sugar. I was able to finish the code and get it to run. Its really cool and the coding I thought would be a lot harder but it was pretty easy. I think that the next thing I should do is get the fin/ ruder on the boat to work.
Today was another research and help day. I was researching motors and speed controllers. Then we all helped Janelle with her project. Next class will be more research and hopefully getting the ESC's in.
Today being the first day back it was kind of slow. We had a couple people pop in with Dr. Bill, so we told them about our projects. The next thing we did was introduce our selves to the new guy to our team. Then we talked about what we should do and start with. Im going to start with trying to get motors for my drone. The speed controllers that Mr. Emmons ordered for me still havent come in so were waiting on that. Next class will be research and looking for motors.
This week was a little stressful with trying to get the flight controller to work. It wasn't working with certain computers and it kept crashing. So hopefully when we get all of the components in we can set it up and it will all work great.
