Today I got my project uploaded to student corner. There were a few other things that Dr. Bill was going to get me started on, but it turned out that there was more we had to do before we could start on it and we ran out of time by the end of class.

This week I put drives into one of the Mac Pros and we turned it into a server for a bunch of movies (that was pretty fun). We also got a new hose and fittings for the air compressor that I helped get set up so they're ready to use when we need them. And finally, I worked on the MacBook Pro that was having the battery problem and we're waiting to hear back from one of the iFixit guys to figure out what we need to do to get it working again. I don't think I'll have too much more to work on next week though since we're just coming to the end of the year and I don't want to get any big new things going that I won't be able to finish.

This class I learned how to reset the SMC/PMU and tried it out on the broken MacBook Pro that was having battery problems. That didn't work so I ended up removing the battery and Dr. Bill emailed one of the iFixit guys hoping we'll figure out what the problem is and how we can solve it.

Today I went through the movies that we put up on the server and found which ones weren't working (because some of them weren't working really well). After that I worked on the air compressor, getting new fittings and a new hose ready so they can attach to it.

Macey and I installed four 2TB drives in one of the Mac Pros. Then I accessed it through my computer remotely and used SoftRAID to set up a RAID system on the Mac Pro. Then we tested it out by uploading The Princess Bride to the server and from my computer I was able to enter the server address and watch the movie from my laptop. (I probably made that much more vague than it actually is, but it was quite a process).
Also, Macey took apart a drive and Dr. Bill showed us how it works. Pretty cool!

This week wasn't too complicated. I did some cleaning, wrapped up a few things, worked on the Mac Pros, and worked on my spring exhibition stuff. Good week!

Today we packed up the logic board from the computer that I repaired last week and got it ready to send off to the same place we got the new one from.
I still had some time left, so I cleaned the class laptops. Then at the end of class, I was around (I wasn't much help though) while Dr. Bill helped Mr. Schorn recover music to his laptop from a hard drive.

This week was really cool. I missed the first class we had, but I spent the other two replacing the logic board in one of Dr. Bill's MacBook Air laptops. It took me a while to get done but it was really fun and I really liked working on it. When I was done and it worked, I was relieved and really happy that it worked. I think this has been one of my favorite repairs so far.

This class I finished installing the logic board in the MacBook Air. I was a little nervous about whether or not it would work, but we powered it on and as far as we could tell, everything was good! It was a really fun project and I'm pretty proud that it worked.

This class I worked on installing a new logic board in one of Dr. Bill's MacBook Airs. In the class time that I had, I got the old logic board disconnected and removed, got the heat sink off and installed it onto the new logic board (also learned how to apply thermal paste). I got the new logic board put in and partially connected, and next class all I have to do is finish connecting it, close it up, and test if it works. (Seriously hoping it does!)

This week I took apart a power supply, missed a class in the middle of the week, and wrapped up with working on an XServe. Even though I only had two classes, I feel like I learned a lot.

Today we tapped into the big ol' XServes down in the basement of the ELab.

We hooked it up to a monitor and tried to get Ubuntu installed in it but it wasn't working and by the end of class we didn't have a solution yet so we'll probably continue with it next class.

Today I took apart a power supply that had stopped working. It was mostly to learn how it was put together and we can use it for parts if we need to. I also installed NoMachine on my laptop and we were trying to use it to connect to the Mac that I installed Ubuntu on last week.

This week had a lot of variety. Our first class this week I just worked more on cleaning the Mac computers out, but the second day of class my little sister's 1st grade class came up to the Energy Lab and I got to spend some time with her as we showed them around the energy lab. They were very impressed. Finally, on the last day of class, I learned how to install Ubuntu from a USB onto a Mac. That was really new and cool to me.
