Breakthrough. I got my LCD to say hello world! This was a crazy difficult task. The problem was that the example circuitry had a potentiometer used with the lcd on the third pin. I didn't know what to do with the wire that was supposed to plug into the center of the potentiometer.
Davy solved this problem. We plugged it into the ground row on the circuit board. Problem solved. LCD activated. Then it was just a matter of specifying the output pins in the code... and... "hello world!"
