    12-terrestrial biomes
    • 9 biomes
    • defined by temp, precipitation, plant forms
    • climbing from sea level to mountains mimics biomes
    • plants depend not on what is constant, but what will not happen (like friends)
    • climate diagrams: temp, precipitation, growing season (above freezing)
      • clues: when is summer (north hemisphere is july)
      • how much rain max and minimum (rain forest vs. desert)
      • temperature fluctuation (extreme in land bound, slight in oceanic)
      • If rain is above temp curve, temp constrained
      • if temp is above rain, rain constrained
      • must understand eTO: evapotranspiration (amount of water for homeostasis)
    • Tundra: cold, no trees, only grasses, permafrost (no tree roots), cold so slow decomposition, poor nutrient level
    • Boreal Forest (recall aurora boralis=northern lights): coniferous, 50-60°N, dry, low nutrients
    • Temperate (mild) rain forest: 40-60°F, rainy, foggy, large trees, redwoods, lumber, low nutrient soil
    • Temperate (mild) seasonal forest: leaves change, adirondacks, greater extremes, high nutrients, 1000 mm of rain
    • Woodland/shrubland:hot, dry summer, rainy winters, rarely freezing, Chapparal in CA, wildfires
    • Temperate (mild) grassland/cold desert: great plains (Nebraska), 10m of soil, prairie grasses 8 ft. tall, steppes in Russia, Pampas in South America.
    • Tropical (tropics are at 23.5°) rainforest: WET, WARM, poor soil (held in vegetation) rapid photosynthesis, usually constant temperature, biodiversity
    • Tropical seasonal forest/savanna; warm, wet/dry seasons (e.g. monsoons),
    • Subtropical desert: 30° hot, dry, sparse vegetation
    13-aquatic biomes
    • Riparian= rivers
    • lakes and ponds: static water, photosynthesis is important
    • littoral=shore (see littoral navy) algae and plants
    • limnetic=open water (pelagic in the ocean)
    • phytoplankton=floating algae
    • benthic=bottom of the lake (or ocean)
    • profunal-very deep, dark (see hadal in the ocean)
    • oligo=few trophic=levels oligotrophic = low productivity
    • meso=middle, eutorphic=high
    • wetlands=some flow, lots of wildlife, usually shallow
    • salt marshes=brackish water, some vegetation, barrier for storms
    • mangrove=salt tolerant swamp (lots of anaerobic decay, so very smelly)
    • intertidal=ocean contact
    • reefs-animals make the structure
    • open ocean-pelagic (open)
    • photic/aphotic=light (see also hadal and profundal)
    • n.b. chemosynthesis=heat creatures
