    Winter Break notes, v.1

    Team,
As soon as the dust settles from your other finals, here's a list of things to take care of, hopefully in order over winter break:
    1. Exam corrections: I've passed out your MC sections of the diagnostic exam with the correct answers marked. Please explain each of these if you got any wrong, and be prepared to discuss in class in January. Your corrections will count as a score, so please don't miss this chance to start the semester with a strong grade.
    2. Please watch the video "Poisoned Waters" as an introduction to our unit on water. (see location below). I'll post questions on this video below as well. It's a 2 hour video just like "Heat", from the same group "Frontline", and is one of the most powerful videos we may see this year. You may want to download this video for your vacation, see me if I can help. You should be able to hold option while clicking on the link to download.
    3. Chapter 10 in the text: Many of the topics mentioned in the video will be explained in chapter 10 on water. Please pay particular attention to the concepts of Water Quality Index (WQI), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). I think you'll find you think twice before drinking tap water once you understand the situation with endocrine disrupters.
Please be ready to finish the end-of-chapter problems in your first week back, so if you want to get ahead, this is a good first step.

Please check the wiki and weblog over the break, if you are using RSS, this should remind you, and make sure to check your school email regularly.

I'll be around over break, so please let me know if I can help in any way.

    Video questions:

After viewing the film clips on chicken farming and endocrine disruptors,

    respond to the following questions:

    1. How do Perdue and other large chicken producers arrange to grow chickens for consumers? Why don't they raise the chickens themselves?

    2. What is the difference in opinion about chicken manure between Perdue and other large chicken producers and the chicken farmers (represented in the film by Carole Morison)? Do you agree with Perdue or Carole Morison? Why?

    3. What do you understand to be the effect of endocrine disruptors?

    4. Which part of the segment on endocrine disruptors did you find most interesting or disturbing? Why? (Cite details.)

    1. Based on the information in the documentary, do you believe that the effects of endocrine disruptors on fish relate to humans? Why or why not?

    2. How do you think we or our government should address the causes and effects of endocrine disruptors?

  • When was the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) formed? What events prompted its formation?
  • How did deregulation of industry during the Reagan years affect water quality and the overall power of the Environmental Protection Agency?
    • What does “voluntary compliance” mean?
    • Why do businesses favor voluntary compliance?
  • The Clean Water Act of 1972 allows citizens to sue alleged offenders if government agencies do not act. Why is that provision of the law important?
  • The expression “canary in the coal mine” means an early warning of danger. (Coal miners would carry canaries or small animals with them into mines to detect deadly but odorless and tasteless methane gas.)
    • To what does the expression “canary in the coal mine” apply in Poisoned Waters?
  • Twenty million Americans took to the streets for the first Earth Day in 1970 as a result of pollution they could see and smell: The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland burned, with flames that towered eight stories high; the1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara closed virtually all the beaches in Southern California; people had declared Lake Erie dead.
    • How, according to the film, have both pollution and people's reaction to Earth Day changed since 1970?
  • What do “endocrine disruptors” do? Why do genetic mutations in fish disturb scientists so much?
  • How do the products that average people use each day end up polluting the nation's and world's waterways?
  • How should we pay for environmental cleanup? Should it be the responsibility of industry? Government? Individuals? Explain your reasoning.
